What is WHM / cPanel and why it matters for hosting

The control panel that runs a huge share of the web — what it does and how I use it to manage client sites.

What is WHM / cPanel and why it matters for hosting

If you've ever hosted a site, you've probably touched cPanel. WHM is the admin layer above it.

cPanel (per-site)

  • Files, databases, email accounts, SSL, subdomains, backups.
  • The dashboard most hosting companies hand you.

WHM (server/reseller)

  • Creates and manages multiple cPanel accounts.
  • Sets resource limits, installs certificates, tunes the server.

Why it matters

For clients on shared or reseller hosting, WHM/cPanel is how I provision accounts, wire up email and DNS, install SSL, and take backups — without anyone needing to touch a terminal.
